An Update on Demolition!

Hello!  It's been a while since I posted because it really did take a while to get all that terracotta up.  Now it seems as though things are in full swing.  No seriously - we've spent at least three hours at the house for the past two days and I can guarantee we'll be there for another three tomorrow!  Anyways here are a few more photos to document all the progress being made:

Hello!
How about that wallpaper?
BEFORE: These photos document the upstairs guest bathroom.  I love that it has space for double sinks!

No floor, shower, or sink!
AFTER:
How about a fresh start?
Do you remember the major concern of the upstairs guest bedrooms being open to the living room?  Here's what the bedrooms look like as of now!  On the left are two windows that look to the beautiful outdoors.  On the right are the two openings that over look the living room.  You can actually see the lights that are hanging in the living room!

Who thought this was a good idea?

So. Gross.

On the right is the view out of the openings looking down into the living room.  See all those gross stains that are on the sub flooring?  Ewww.  Fortunately they have already gone ahead and replaced the old flooring.  Hopefully soon all the sub floor will be down.  Next up we will be tackling paint colors and hardwoods.  Bring it!

Terracotta? More like Terror-cotta!

When we purchased the home we knew it was a possibility that the 30 year old terracotta floors that covered the kitchen and hallway could be a nightmare to remove.

Look at all that TERROR-cotta...
We had no idea how much of a nightmare the tile would become!  The guys doing the demo (Steven & Paul - they're wonderful) thought they would have the tile up by last Thursday.  Then it was definitely by Friday.  No wait, the tile would be up by Saturday.  Well, now we will finish it up by Sunday for sure.

I stopped by Sunday afternoon and Steven and Paul were standing outside the front of the house.  Missing was the insanely loud noise of the jackhammer slowly chiseling away at the terracotta floor tiles.  They come up to me and I know something isn't right.  They're apologizing.  Apparently the jackhammer died.  I'm pretty sure the terracotta tile killed it.  The jackhammer was no match to those thick baked earth tiles.

I didn't get an opportunity to swing by the house today but hopefully those burdensome tiles will be gone.  Here are a few videos I took of Steven working on the jackhammer - before it's demise.  WARNING: check your computer's volume before you click!  It's quite loud!

Also - notice how long Steven has the jackhammer against the tile and how it seems like nothing is really happening.  It took these guys forever to get one single tile up.  Poor guys!

Go figure, the terracotta tile is miserable to remove.

Let's Take a Tour, Shall We?

Fortunately the exterior of the home has been maintained wonderfully and there aren't any major issues.  The only thing we have done on the exterior is cut down two River Birches.  I was so sad to see them go but they were planted too close to the home and were dropping so many branches!  It was a never ending battle to keep the pathways clear of the branches.  Here is an updated picture of the front of the home without the two River Birches.
Ok, now let's go inside!  I will only highlight the major rooms of the home now but as each room is worked on I will update them accordingly here.  First we will start off with what was once advertised as a "cook's kitchen" when the home was on the market with another realtor.
"Cook's Kitchen"
Yes, the kitchen is spacious and hosts such amenities such as double ovens, gas cook top and a beautiful stainless steel refrigerator.  However everything besides the fridge is extremely dated.  Readers, prepare yourself for the time warp back to the 80s...

Don't you love the brass lights that look like they came off a drying chair from a hair salon?  How about the bright blue cabinets?  The terracotta floors were beautiful at one time but after almost 30 years of wear and tear they are covered with chips and missing pieces.  In case there was any doubt, this kitchen will be completely gutted.
Next up we have the powder room which we have lovingly renamed the "library."  No, it's not large enough for a library.  It earned it's nickname after the wallpaper that was chosen to decorate it.
Pretty special right?

The beige toilet and pedestal sink combination help date the powder room along with the wallpaper.  Like the kitchen, we will be starting from scratch here!

Gorgeous fireplace!
The living room has a truly stunning fireplace that we fell in love with the instant we saw it.  Honestly besides the flooring the living room doesn't really have much to update.  The only glaring issue in the living room isn't something you notice at first glance.  You notice it when you look up.

How dangerous are those openings?!
Believe it or not there are two bedrooms upstairs that have complete openings overlooking the living room.  This is so dangerous, I honestly have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that these opening have presumably lasted for over 30 years!  Wasn't anyone worried about children falling out of these openings?!  Good news is that it should be easy to fill in the openings.
Looking out onto the pool area.

Along with the fireplace we also fell in love with how the living room opens up to the pool area.  Beautiful!  The layout of the home really focuses on the pool and all the nature surrounding the golf course!

Already has a water line!

Next up we have our basement!  We are so excited to update the basement and spend time down there watching FOOTBALL!  It's also great that the basement has a bar!  Fortunately, the basement isn't going to be too much of a headache.  The major concern with the basement is updating the full bath.  It's incredibly dated and actually has five light switches in it each operating a different light or fan.  Crazy!   In the pictures below you'll see that part of the carpet has already been torn up.  During the home inspection they found water damage and had to tear up a section of the carpet in order to properly remediate the situation.  We were not too upset about it because we plan on replacing the Hunter Green carpeting.
Gorgeous walk out basement.
So great the basement has a full bath but it needs some updating!
Bob & Andrew checking out the basement.
Lots to do!

Last but not least I'll feature the master.  One of the things we fell in love with about the home was the space.  We were able to look past the 30 year old fixtures, carpeting and decor and saw the potential the home provides.  The master is no different.  There is carpeting completely throughout the master bath.  The color they chose to accent the master was a light pink/mauve color.  It's quite hideous.  The master bath has double sinks, a water closet, a tub, shower and make up vanity.  Amazing space!  Everything however is very pink and very carpeted.  This will be completely gutted as well.  Fortunately we don't have to change the layout.
mmmmm Mauve.

Pink shower.

Private Pink wash closet.

Raised pink tub. So hard to get in & out of!
Pink, carpet, and vanity on the right.

Even the spacious walk in closet has pink cabinets.

Pink built in drawers in Master Bedroom.

Romantic fireplace accented by - what else - PINK!

Phew!  That wraps up the basic tour of the home.  Are you concerned for our sanity yet?  This renovation project will surely be an adventure and I'm excited to share it with you all!  All that I ask of you is to remind me of the excitement I'm feeling now when inevitably down the line I want to rip my hair out because XYZ went wrong.

Here Goes Nothing!

Welcome to the site!  A close friend (shout out Ashly Denison!) recommended that I document the massive home renovation project Andrew and I have decided to take on in Greensboro, NC.  We have lived in Greensboro for about 8 years and we love it here.  We purchased our current home 7 years ago and have spent that time slowly taking on smaller projects here and there updating it.  It has given us some good experience.  However, this new home, was built in 1985 and not much on the interior has been updated since.  To put it into perspective, we were 3 years old when the house went up!  I mean, we're 80s children at heart and have love for it but the thick pile carpeting in the Master Bath for instance?  Yea, that's got to go!

We are excited, a little overwhelmed, and open to sharing all the ups and inevitable downs that comes along with a home renovation project.  Especially one this size.  I grew up in a home that had a similar Mediterranean exterior so this home pulls at my heart strings.  Please feel free to leave thoughts, comments or ideas on any of the postings!  We can't wait to make this Mediterranean Mess a Masterpiece!
